Jack Taylor wrote “The Needles Excellency. A New Booke wherein are divers Admirable Workes wrought with the Needle, Newly invented and cut in Copper for the pleasure and profit of the industrious.” in 1631. It includes designs for lace and embroidery and a long poem about the art of sewing including this quote which basically tells women to shut up and sew. I’ve added my refrain.
